Safety Committee

SAFETY ACTIVITY: For employers with 11 or more employees. Elect new Safety Committee Members.  Review appropriate items of your Safety Policy from your company Accident Prevention Plan with staff.  The committee is made up of management-designated representatives and at least an equal number of employee-elected representatives, preferably one from each department.

SUPERVISORS: Send around a ballot with employees who volunteer for the position and leave spaces for "write-in" members.

FREQUENCY: You must ELECT your employee representatives EVERY YEAR.  Employee elected members can serve multiple years in a row.

NOTE: The Safety Committee should function as below:

  • A safety committee will hold meetings at least quarterly to create and maintain a safe and healthy workplace for all employees. Employees will have an opportunity to voice safety concerns with at least one management member in attendance.

  • Review safety and health inspection reports to help correct safety hazards.

  • Evaluate the accident investigations conducted since the last meeting to determine if the cause(s) of the unsafe situation was identified and corrected.

  • Evaluate our workplace accident and illness prevention program and discuss recommendations for improvement, if needed.

  • Address Record of Hazards Observed submitted by employees.

  • Document attendance and topics discussed.

  • Present action items to Director’s office.

Items can be presented to the Safety Committee through a Record of Hazard Observed, Incident Investigation Form, Facilities or Construction Checklist, verbal request at a committee meeting, or by any written request from any employee.
